Assignment 12: Essential Question

My essential question:

Why should we justify the use of non-myeloablative stem cell transplantation over the conventional bone marrow transplantation?

I choose this research topic as my essential question as I feel this is a topic most people are familiar with, yet do not actually know what are the depths of it. Most people know this is a fairly new field of research in the medical field. Many people know that it is research that has high potential for creating life changing treatments for the future. They also know that it is a very complicated field. However, most people do not know how much we have been able to advance in this field. This is what excites me about finding the answer to my essential question. Once people can see how far ahead stem cell research has come it will give hope to some as well as excitement. I find this topic fascinating. The person that thought of bone marrow transplant had to be a genius. Bone marrow transplant is the only transplant that you do not have to take rejection medicine for the rest of your life. This is a complicated but truly interesting topic to research. Which is also why I narrowed down my essential question. Stem cell by itself is a very borad and complicated topic therefore i specified it to just compring the past stem cell procdures to the modern more effective procedures.
