Annotated Bibliography #3: The effectiveness of auditory stimulation in children with autism spectru

Gee, B., Thompson, K., Pierce, A., Toupin, M., & Holst, J.

(2015). The effectiveness of auditory stimulation in

children with autism spectrum disorders: A case–

control study. International Journal Of Therapy &

Rehabilitation, 22(1), 36-46.

This case study was conducted to support and prove the effective use of auditory stimulation within children with autism spectrum disorder. As said by the author “The purpose of this study was to determine whether TLP reduces sensory over-responsitivity (SOR) to auditory stimuli.” This was done by giving children with autism spectrum disorder therapy session over 28 weeks that utilized The Listening Program (TLP). This is seen in the procedure section of the article, “The B(1) phase initiated the TLP intervention. Participants listened to 15-minute sessions of psychoacoustically modified classical music twice a day, five days per week for ten weeks in their home environment … The TLP intervention was delivered through a CD player, amplifier and headphones retrofitted with a bone conductor. “ At the end of the study it was shown that the results display some support for utilizing the TLP therapy on children with over-responsitivity to auditory stimuli. This can be seen in at the end of the article “The results lend some support to the use of TLP with children on the autism spectrum who are experiencing auditory SOR.”

When looking at the article its self it is safe to say it is a valid source of support as it is a scholarly reviewed article off of Galileo. The authors provided their hypothesis, their procedure, their evidence, their conclusion, and their reference. This lets the audience see how effective and trustworthy the study conducted was.

This article is an excellent source of support for my essential question as it displays a method of which occupational therapist utilize to help sensory children achieve a balance in their auditory system. By achieving this balance children with sensory disorders will be able to live through their lives a bit more fluently. This can be seen in the medical evidence displayed in this article as there was success in improving the over-responsitivity to auditory stimuli.
